A rest period also permits partial replenishment of the muscle’s ATP supply (the fuel source for initial muscle movement) and other metabolic adjustments.

“Short rest periods have been shown to produce more testosterone and growth hormone secretion than longer rest periods when other factors are constant,” notes Dr. William Kraemer, who is also co-author of the reference book Designing Resistance Training Programs. “Shorter rest periods also increase the number of capillaries inside your muscle fibers and boost the muscle’s buffering capacity, which increases its ability to tolerate the build-up of lactic acid. These adaptations enhance endurance and contribute to muscle growth. ”

To achieve peak intensity of your muscle building workouts, you should keep your rest periods as short as they can be while still providing time for appropriate recovery. A good rule of thumb is to rest one to two minutes between sets or until your heartbeat is back to normal, whichever is longer. You may wonder how anyone could do that many sets, but look closely the next time you see these people train. Chances are that they do a set, then rest five to ten minutes before doing another one. During the 3 week body fat phases you will do 3 full body workouts during the week which vary the rest, rep, and the load of the weight. I did those on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Thirty five minutes is all they take but you will be in a full sweat and exhausted at the end. These workouts produce muscle and burn fat. You do need to have a bit of conditioning before you tackle these workouts because they will exhaust you. The other two days of the week you do a 20 minute High Intensity Interval Training cardio session or program. Your time in the gym is close to 3 hours for the entire week. That’s not much of a sacrifice to drop 5 pounds of fat and build muscle at the same time! During my beginning 3 weeks I was a bit loose on the diet having 3-4 cheat meals per week rather than the prescribed 2 (yes you get to eat cheat meals, pizza for me!) At the end of the first 3 weeks I lost 1 inch off of my waist while gaining 2 pounds on the scale. I have discovered that every inch from my waist equates to 4-5 pounds of fat therefore I lost close to 4 pounds of fat and gained 6 pounds of lean body weight. The difference in my physique was amazing. You might be thinking that is a lot of mass to gain but I started using creatine during that 3 weeks and generally my muscle cells volumize and I gain exactly 6-7 pounds after it is in my system. So I was was right on plan. I lost nearly 5 pounds and my muscles had more mass from the creatine.

I went right into the muscle production phase which is a nice change of pace. Chad uses something very radical called HFT or High Frequency Training. I trained each muscle about 5 times per week. The weight, reps, sets, and rest periods are changed up each workout so it keeps your body wondering and allows the separate pathways in the muscles time for recovery. I gained an amazing 8 pounds in 3 weeks. I was really sore the first week but became accustomed to it. Part of my success was sticking very close to his diet which recommended a large amount of BCAA’s during the entire 3 weeks. High protein, supplemented BCAA’s, and rigorous workouts for 3 weeks put slabs of muscle on very fast. There are no cardio workouts in this 3 weeks because the body needs all of it’s of a sacrifice for rest.

After those 6 weeks I already had a big change in my body so the book was already well worth the cost. I finished the transformation and can tell you it lives up to its name. The beginning 3 week fat burning program is so effective that I have used that segment alone 3 additional times during the course of the year when I want to drop 5-6 pounds very fast and gain some muscle.
